Wayne Rohloff

Funeral services for Wayne Rohloff of Morris, MN were held Wednesday, August 18, 2010 at 10:30 AM at Faith Lutheran Church in Morris, MN. Reverend Dell Sanderson officiated. Burial will be in Summit Cemetery in Morris.

Wayne Walter George Rohloff, son of Fred and Rose (Hamann) Rohloff, was born February 10, 1926 in Fairfield Township of Swift County, Minnesota. Wayne was baptized on March 14, 1926 at Fairfield church and later confirmed in Holloway. He attended country school in District 2 Moyer Township. Growing up on the farm, Wayne loved animals especially his horses and dogs. This love for animals was present through his entire life. He started farming with his dad after he graduated from the 8th grade at his country school. On September 6, 1944 Wayne was united in marriage to Vera Stock. To this union six children were born. In 1946 he moved to Horton Township, where he bought and operated a dairy farm for 30 years. The family still farms there today.

Wayne was an active member of the community. He taught Sunday school for 25 years and served on the Agralite Co-op and A.S.C.S boards. After Wayne retired from farming, he worked at West Central Homes for 12 years as caretaker. Wayne’s first wife, Vera, passed away in 1985. He later married Ardelle Anderson and the couple resided in Morris until Wayne’s death.

Wayne loved watching the Minnesota Twins. He enjoyed spending time outside fishing, tending his garden, playing with dogs Mitzy and Buddy, and decorating his yard with Christmas lights and other outdoor decorations. Wayne loved spending time with family and friends putting puzzles together, dancing, and playing cards, especially Schmeer.

Wayne spent the last few months of his life at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck, where he was crowned King this past spring. Wayne passed away Saturday morning August 14, 2010 at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home, having lived to reach the age of 84 years.

Wayne is survived by his wife: Ardelle Rohloff of Morris; six children: Larry (LaMae) Rohloff of Atwater, Lanny (Linda) Rohloff of Morris, Lowell (Cindy) Rohloff of Morris, Bonnie (Greg) Weiler of Morris, Connie (Steve) Berg of Bird Island, and LuAlan (Shawn) Rohloff of Morris; four stepchildren Calvin (Cheryl) Anderson of Alexandria, Gail Hoffman of Fargo, Kay (Gene) Hacker of Hancock, Jan (Tim) Wagener of Minneapolis; 21 grandchildren: Todd Rohloff, Keith Rohloff, Troy Rohloff, Craig Rohloff, Kevin Rohloff, Corey Rohloff, Michael Rohloff, Jamie Rohloff, David Rohloff, Daniel Rohloff, Tammy (Rohloff) Kaufman, Randee (Weiler) Schoenecker, Jeff Weiler, Renee (Weiler) Saito, Ryan Berg, Brent Berg, Jonathan Berg, Wendy Berg, Mitchell Rohloff, Justin Rohloff, and Tanner Rohloff; nine step-grandchildren: Gretchen (Hacker) Shervey, Karla (Hacker) Sundheim, Brendan Hacker, Nathan Hacker, Jack Wagener, Aaron Wagener, Andrea LaFollette, Brian Hoffman, and Rachel Hoffman; 38 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Vera, grandson Lonnie Rohloff, and infant brother Virgil Rohloff.

Pallbearers for service were: Wayne’s grandsons: Todd Rohloff, Corey Rohloff, Jeff Weiler, Justin Rohloff, Craig Rohloff, Ryan Berg and Mitchell Rohloff. Honorary pallbearers are all of Wayne’s remaining grandchildren. Rita Lambert will serve as pianist for the service with Lynn Shultz and Cindy Rohloff providing special music. Pedersen Funeral Home in Morris is in charge of the arrangements.

Rose M. Parson

Rose M. Parson, 88, Barrett, died Saturday, August 14, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hoffman. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, August 18, at Peace Lutheran Church in Barrett with the Rev. Matthew Rose officiating. Burial was at Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Visitation was at  the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake on Tuesday, August 17, with an Eastern Star service that evening.

Rose was born December 18, 1921, to Anton and Selma (Alvstad) Ronhovde in Barrett, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lien Township. In 1938 she graduated from Barrett High School and worked at the Grant County Courthouse for a few years following graduation. She married Hugo Parson on March 25th, 1944. Their twin daughters Jean and Judy were born in August 1945.

Rose and Hugo lived on a farm south west of Elbow Lake until their retirement when they moved to a home in Elbow Lake. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elbow Lake and very active in U.P.W. and taught Sunday school. Rose enjoyed 52 years as an Eastern Star member and was a Past Matron. Being involved in community organizations was important to Rose and she was an active member and provided leadership for Study Club, West Central Regional Arts Council and Hospital Auxiliary. Rose and Hugo co-chaired the 1987 Elbow Lake Centennial celebration. In 2004 she moved from her Elbow Lake home to Barrett Assisted Living and in 2006 became a resident of Good Samaritan Society, Hoffman.

Her children and grandchildren were a source of great joy and she had a special talent for entertaining family and friends with great food and hospitality.  Other interests were flower gardening, bird watching and playing bridge.

She is survived by her sister Lou Score, sister-in-law Ardis Ronhovde; daughters Jean (Richard) Kvols, Judy (Marvin) Enslin; grandchildren Beth Enslin Brown, Kris (Doug Fryer) Kvols, Eric (Katie) Enslin and Kassinda (Jim Thomson fiancée) Kvols.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hugo, her parents, sister June, brother Merton, brothers-in-law Jack and Palmer and grandson-in-law Mike Brown. Vivian Olson

Funeral services for Vivian Olson of Glenwood, formerly of Starbuck, were held Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 11:00 am at East Zion Lutheran Church of rural Starbuck. Reverend Becky Worner officiated.  Burial was at the church cemetery.

Vivian Irene Aslagson, daughter of Henry & Gina (Klevann) Aslagson, was born March 6, 1920 at Starbuck, Minnesota.  She grew up in the rural Starbuck area, where she was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith by Rev. G.O. Forde at St. John’s Lutheran Church.  Vivian graduated as Valedictorian of her Starbuck High School Class of 1938. She then attended one year of normal training in Glenwood, and after graduating, furthered her education at Moorhead State Teachers College. After graduating, she returned to Starbuck and taught in rural schools in the Starbuck and Kensington areas.  On July 17, 1943, she was united in marriage to Arthur J. Olson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck.  They farmed and made their home in Milbank, SD until 1947, at which time they returned to Starbuck, where they lived and farmed for 36 years in Langhei Township.  In 1983, they retired and moved into Starbuck, where they lived until moving to the Glenwood Estates Apartments in 2003.  Art passed away on February 9, 2005.  Viv has continued to live at Glenwood Estates since that time.

Vivian died on Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood, MN, having lived to reach the age of 90 years. She is survived by five children: Joseph (Gail) Olson of Graham, WA, James (Peggy) Olson of New Prague, Mary (Carroll) Suckstorff of Kensington, David (Kathy) Olson of Coon Rapids and Daniel (Diane) Olson of Brandon; 17 grandchildren: Josh (Michelle) Olson, Luana (Mark) Ciccarelli, Regina (Danny) Brill, Tanya (Chad) Friese, Sarah (Justin) Hoidahl, Ryan (Brittany) Suckstorff, Kristi (Jason) Wildman, Trevor Olson, Trent Olson, Kyle Olson, Taryn Olson, Kari Olson, Trista Olson, Kailley Olson, Andrew Olson (fiancé, Maria), Jocelyn Olson and Nicki Olson; 10 great-grandchildren: Alyvia Brill, Maddie Ciccarelli, Austin Friese, Ayden Friese, Evan Friese, Jayden Hoidahl, Kendall Hoidahl, Kaylee Suckstorff, Aubri Suckstorff and Miles Wildman; three sisters-in-law: Florence Hensel of Park Rapids, Margaret Aslagson of Starbuck and Muriel Aslagson of Starbuck, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.  She was preceded in death by her husband;  one great-granddaughter, Krista Suckstorff; daughter-in-law, Marlys (Odegaard) Olson; her parents; two brothers: Harry & Sidney Aslagson and infant twin siblings.

Pallbearers for the service were: All of Vivian’s Grandchildren.  Monica Gosseling will serve as organist for the service, with special music being provided by Monica Gosseling and Reverend Becky Worner.  Starbuck Funeral Home in Starbuck is in charge of the arrangements.

Cathy Joanne Engelby

Cathy Joanne Engelby, age 56, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 with her family: Steve, Kristel, Darcie, Steve, and Judy at her bedside at the Good Samaritan Center, Hoffman, MN following a courageous battle against cancer.

Cathy was born in Graceville, MN on August 24, 1953, the daughter of William (Bill) and Lorna (Jurgens) Boerner. One of five children, she grew up on the family farm where she learned the benefit of hard work and hard play which served her well in her future.

Cathy was baptized,confirmed, and married at Kongsvinger Lutheran Church, Donelly, MN. On November 29, 1980 she was untied in marriage to Steven Engelby. Together they spent their life in Hoffman, later moving to their home outside of town. They had two daughters, Kristel born in 1982 and Darcie born in 1983.

Cathy graduated from Herman High School in 1971 and from Moorhead Tech in 1972. In the spring of 1972 she started her first job with the state of Minnesota in education in St. Paul.

She loved her jobs with the state of Minnesota. She worked for the departments of Education, Welfare, and Natural Resources. Cathy was a member of Messiah Lutheran in Hoffman, MN. She cherished her family and friends, and always enjoyed the “Potlucks and Can Parties” at Elk Lake.

She enjoyed playing softball, her fishing trips to Lake of the Woods at Angle Outpost Resort and later Flag Island Resort, deer hunting with the “Buckridge Hunting Club” —especially hunting in the “Nook” with the “Pretty Deer.” She loved to crochet, embroidery, knit, sew, can, and sharing her love for these from the gifts she gave to family and friends. The “Crochet Group” and “Cooking Class Group” were very special to her.

Cathy’s passion was her family, Steve, Kristel, and Darcie. Later adding a wonderful son-in-law, Steve, was a huge bonus to her. She cherished her family, encouraged her daughters, and followed her daughters in their sports activities. She was always so proud and thankful for each one of them.

Cathy had a courageous, determined, and very positive attitude which she showed to all those around her. She taught all who knew her how to fight cancer and later on how to pass on with respect.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Lorna Boerner and brother-in-law Allen Engelby. She is survived by her husband Steven; daughters Kristel (Steve) Strittmatter of Hawley, MN, and Darcie of Fargo, ND; brothers Jerry (Colleen) Boerner of Bergenfields, NJ, Alan (Bonnie) Boerner of Mission, British Columbia; sisters Vicki (Douglas) Engelby of Nashua, MN, and Judy (Thomas) Green of Kensington, MN; brothers-in-law Lewayne (Fran) Engelby and Daryl (Kristi) Engelby; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
A memorial service held on August 7, 2010 at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Hoffman, MN with Reverend Steve Olson officiating. Music was provided by Bev Yochim and Faye Giese. Honorary urn bearers were Nathan Engelby, Ryan Engelby, Matthew Engelby, Chris Engelby, Keven Engelby, Wade Boerner, Zac Boerner, and Steve Strittmatter.
