The mood was right for a celebration at the Hoffman Commerce & Ag’s annual meeting at Bullfrog’s Saturday evening.

by Nick Ripperger
The Hoffman Commerce and Ag Club celebrated the end of a successful year and the beginning of a new one at its annual meeting at Bullfrogs Bar and Grill this past Saturday evening.
Nearly 60 members and their guests attended, were treated to hors d’oeuvres and a great supper, and were updated on the accomplishments of 2011 and plans for 2012.
Among the new businesses in Hoffman this year:  The Thrift Store, Motel One, Race Star Motor Sports, chiropractor Dr. Chris Larson, Elroy Frank’s Computer Store, and Tracy’s Tots.
Prairie Ridge Medical established a presence in the Health Care Mall, Grant County Wind was deemed to be officially completed, Starner Farms erected a new barn at their site, and the Hoffman/Kensington Food Shelf was set up in Hoffman.
Among the activities and projects the C&A sponsored or was a involved in this past year:  the water tower logo contest, Easter drawing, the community garden, the city park’s new playground equipment, Harvest Festival, Halloween party and pumpkins contest, the Holiday Expo, Thanksgiving drawings, Santa Days and the Festival of Trees, the skating rink, new tables and chairs for Hoffman Square, and “Make a Difference Day.”
Among the new projects the C&A plans to be involved in during 2012 are developing a walking path in the city park and the Grant County Expo in April.
The Expo has become an annual event in Grant County with the location moving from town to town each year.  This year it’s Hoffman’s turn.  The event has grown steadily over the years, and if that trend continues, it could be the largest and best one yet.
Businesses and vendors from throughout the county have booths or tables at the Expo, showing those who attend what a wide variety of goods and services are available right here in Grant County.  It is free for everyone, no selling will go on, there will be entertainment for kids and adults, and there will be door prizes as well as complimentary giveaways from many of the vendors.  Mark your calendar for April 21.
Newly elected this year were Amy Swenson as president and Kay Persons as vice-president.  Kim Brakken is the treasurer and Bonnie Bender is the secretary.
There are currently 63 members of the Hoffman Commerce and Ag Club.  Both business and individuals within a 5-mile radius of the junction of Highways 27 and 55 may become members.  Individual membership is $25, and business membership begins at $50 based on the size of the business.  If you are interested in becoming a member contact Ed Persons at 986-2212.

by C.A. Ray, Grant County Herald

The Grant County Commissioners agreed to have the terrazzo floors and marble steps on the interior of the Grant County Courthouse refinished as part of the courthouse energy upgrading going on this winter. Construction Manager Jesse Leimkuhl told the board the floors may have never been refinished, or if they have, it was a very long time ago. More on page 2734

Ed Persons and Muriel Krusemark

from Sharon Schmickle of MinnPost.com

On Muriel Krusemark’s tour of Hoffman, every stop has a story relating to economic ups and downs in small-town Minnesota. Take the spiffy new medical clinic on Main Street. Three years ago, Krusemark called it the “falling down building.” The town won an $86,500 grant to fix it up. But still, getting the job done would be a stretch.

A brief history of Kensington 1900-1909 Era of Business

By 1900 more businesses had been added to the Village of Kensington according to the 1900 Federal Census.

Four general stores were operating: Louis Thompson, the one who started the very first general store in 1887; Linus Peterson, Engbret Aaberg, and partners Peter Alldrin and Charles Lilyquist.  Young Arthur Osterberg at age 16 was a salesman at one the stores.  He would later become owner of his own general store, the Kensington Mercantile, which would be passed down to his son, Walter Osterberg, who remained in business until 1970.
